    Appalachian Mountains Writing Project Summer Institute

    We invite interested participants to join us for our third annual Summer Institute, which utilizes the National Writing Project Summer Institute curriculum. The 2024 theme will be “Writing Your Story.” Through a series of writing activities and discussions, we will explore how writing our own story can be a source of healing and wellness for us and for our students.

    22nd Annual Martin and Doris Rosen Symposium

    July 11 - 17, 2024

    The theme of this year's Symposium is "The Holocaust & America." We will explore the relationships among the United States, Germany and European Jews leading up to, during and after the Holocaust. Using experiential learning practices, in particular Universal Design of Instruction, we will consider Holocaust questions such as antisemitism in America and Germany, eugenics and pseudo-science, the Nuremberg Laws and their relationship to Jim Crow Laws, Jews as American refugees and much more.

    Guy’s Damn Right Farewell tour will see the Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner performing hits from throughout his career, in addition to his 2022 album, “The Blues Don’t Lie.” At age 87, Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues.

    Renowned for his acting work on stage and screen (the Oscar-nominated film “Da 5 Bloods” and in Shonda Rhimes’ “Scandal”), fans of musical theater best know Norm Lewis, the SAG and Tony Award-nominated star, for his booming baritone and the magnetic charisma that has marked every step of his nearly three decades of Broadway excellence. In his one-man show, Lewis will present a revue of songs hand-picked from his impressive resumé of the who’s-who among leading man roles and will lend his unique and insightful vocal versatility to selections ranging from jazz and blues, to soul, pop, and classic American favorites.

    Keynote Lecture: “America’s Response to the Holocaust: A Moral Challenge for Every Generation” with Dr. Rafael Medoff

    As one of the leading experts on the Holocaust, Dr. Rafael Medoff has been an outspoken critic of western countries and their reticence to support European Jews before and during WWII. Medoff is the founding director of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies and has authored more than 20 books about the Holocaust, Zionism and American Jewish history. Medoff has also taught and lectured at US universities and is a member of the Committee on Ethics in Jewish Leadership. Lecture presented in-person and via Zoom.

    Keynote Lecture: “The Critical Rise of Antisemitism Today” with Rabbi Dr. Michael Berenbaum

    Rabbi Dr. Michael Berenbaum serves as the director of the Sigi Ziering Institute, exploring the ethical and religious implications of the Holocaust. He holds a professorship in Jewish Studies at American Jewish University. For three years, he was president and chief executive officer of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. In addition, he served as the first director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM)’s Research Institute. His work in film has won Emmy Awards and Academy Awards. Lecture presented in-person and via Zoom.

Brad Paisley has earned his place in country music history as one of the genre’s most talented and decorated male solo artists. For more than 20 years, his songwriting and unmatched showmanship have won him numerous awards, including three GRAMMYs, two American Music Awards, 15 Academy of Country Music Awards, and 14 Country Music Association Awards.
